Meta Performs ‘Dismantling the Racism Machine’: Community Dialogue

The Central Jersey Community Coalition is pleased to announce a free, public event, “Meta Performs ‘Dismantling the Racism Machine’: Community Dialogue,” which will support the CJCC mission to “educate, advocate, inspire, and act.” This event features local author and CJCC steering committee member Dr. Karen Gaffney, who recently published “Dismantling the Racism Machine: A Manual and Toolbox” and CJCC partner The Meta Theatre Company. Meta cast members will perform concepts from Karen’s book through an interactive technique to encourage discussion and raise awareness about issues that include: New Jersey is one of the most diverse states but also one of the most racially segregated states in the US. Why don’t we talk about this? Nationally, white household wealth is almost 13 times that of black household wealth and more than 10 times that of Latinx household wealth. Why didn’t I learn this before?

Karen Gaffney, an English Professor at Raritan Valley Community College, says, “This upcoming collaboration with Meta Theatre is what I hope will be the first of many. It will be a great opportunity to raise awareness with the general public about fundamental issues of race and racism that don’t get enough attention and provide tools for action, which were the goals of my new book.”

Caroline Hann, Artistic Co-Director of The Meta Theatre Company, says, “We believe that theatre is a pathway to justice. The Meta Theatre Company uses performance to connect our audiences to issues in our community and shine the light on the invisible, powerful systems that impact our personal lives. Performing excerpts from Dr. Gaffney’s book is a transformative opportunity to show the lived experiences of people oppressed by inter-generational patterns over hundreds of years, and how those same patterns still exist today in our lives. The audience will discuss action plans to stop these oppressive patterns and to continue the work beyond the performance.”

Karen’s book will be available for sale (cash or check only), or you can find it at routledge.com or Amazon. For additional information, go to Karen’s blog with recommended resources (https://dividednolonger.com/) and Meta's website (https://www.themetatheatrecompany.org/).

Mayor Mapp: Reunir las familias

June 24, 2018

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (William Morrow, 2018)

A friend, whose opinion on literature I respect greatly, reported to me recently that she had just finished reading A.J. Finn's debut novel, The Woman in the Window. Of it she said, “I wish I hadn't finished it,” which I interpreted to mean, “It was so good I'm sorry that I finished it.” ...

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly (Naval Institute Press, 2015)

Victoria Kelly's first published volume of poetry, When the Men Go Off to War, is a wonder in that poems can be written so beautifully about the subject of war. Each poem is a jewel, polished and colorful, glittering with elegant imagery, and rich in emotional wallop. The book, divided into three sections, ...

The Queen of the Big Time by Adriana Trigiani (Ballentine Books, 2005)

The Queen of the Big Time by Adriana Trigiani, a New York Times best selling author, was recommended to me by a young woman who actually came from the town of Roseto, Pennsylvania, the place where the novel is set. “The author did such a wonderful job of describing how the town actually is,” said the young lady.

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah (St. Martin's Press, 2018)

What is the “final frontier” on the Earth's surface? Many people would say Alaska, the 49th state, which was added to the United States fifty years ago. Once one has traveled to that remote land, it is impossible to forget the magnificence of the terrain and beasts. Floating by ship in Glacier Bay, surrounded by ...

Into the Water by Paula Hawkins

Into the Water by Paula Hawkins (Riverhead Books, 2017)

I wanted to like Into the Water by Paula Hawkins because I had enjoyed her previous novel, The Girl on the Train, which was a suspenseful thriller. However, when I finished reading the first part of the Into the Water, I realized that I had not absorbed anything that was happening in the story. I blamed myself for not paying ...
