PLAINFIELD, NJ — Demolition is moving swiftly on South Ave. at the site of the former Giovanna’s restaurant.  Earlier in June the family-owned restaurant bid farewell after 36 years to many loyal customers who made it a point to visit before the final closing day. Known for its pickled onions and more, Giovanna's hosted many family celebrations, weekly Rotary of the Plainfields meetings, and Plainfield Symphony after parties.

The site, between Terrill Rd. and Leland Ave., is included in the South Avenue East Redevelopment Plan, and is scheduled to become part of a new Wawa food market with 12 fueling stations. The plan includes other businesses and some residential areas.

Developers gained preliminary site plan approval for Wawa in Fall 2018 and final approval in August 2019, but faced opposition in March from approximately 100 residents who turned out at a Planning Board meeting to ask questions and express concerns for the intended site.
