PLAINFIELD, NJ — TAPinto Plainfield received a sneak peek at Wawa’s newest store.  Located nearby on Route 22, it provided a glimpse into what Plainfield residents can look forward to in the near future. With a formal ribbon cutting scheduled for Thursday, the North Plainfield site hosted a “Taste of Wawa” preview event for media, community partners and VIP customers Wednesday.

Earlier this year, Wawa received approval from the City of Plainfield to construct a store that will include six multi-product fuel dispensers, and each MPD will have two fuel pumps. The store will be located along Plainfield’s Business District on South Ave., commonly seen as the gateway into the Queen City.

One of the loyal VIP customers told TAPinto Plainfield that he was initially sold on Wawa due to store cleanliness, particularly in the bathrooms, and the ability to order a customized hoagie; one can choose from over a thousand ingredients, using either an in-store touch screen device or via the mobile app. Secret menus are offered throughout the year, accessed via a special icon on the computerized touch screens.  He also mentioned the superior customer service, describing it as “second to none.”

In opening remarks on Wednesday, Wawa Area Manager Dan Holland said that the first New Jersey store was opened in 1968, and this new store represents the Wawa design prototype.  Wawa's family-owned business began as a dairy farm with door-to-door milk delivery in Folsom, PA in 1964.

Jason Reed, Director of Store Operations, talked about the planned expansion in Northern New Jersey, noting that the North Plainfield store marks the 252th location. An additional nine stores are planned for the first quarter of 2020, and will include Bellville, Edison and Cranford. In 2020 another 10 stores are in the pipeline, and may include the Plainfield location; an additional 13 stores are set for 2022.

According to Reed, creating new jobs in the community is a priority as each store hires 30 associates and offers competitive benefits. Long-term investment in each store is approximately $6 million per site.

As an active community partner, Wawa plans to kick off its “Lending a Helping Hoagie Campaign,” and will present a check to Community Food Bank of New Jersey, with proceeds up to $2,500 from the first week of hoagie sales to support hunger relief efforts.

The official opening is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 21.  Doors will open at 8 a.m. and the ribbon-cutting will be held at 9 a.m.  Customers will be treated to free coffee through the weekend, there will be free t-shirts for the first 100 through the door on Thursday, and there's a chance to meet the Wawa mascot, Wally Goose, too.
