PLAINFIELD, NJ — A group of 2020 Plainfield graduates came together to release balloons to honor the memory of a classmate who should have shared their special day.

Kayla Spooner succumbed to a disease she just could not overcome; however, members of her graduating class remembered both her and her spirit.

Some students and parents, along with Board of Education member Richard Wyatt and Councilman Sean McKenna, gathered at duCret School of Art, before moving to Hub Stine Field for the balloon release.

Board of Education member Terence Johnson, godfather to Spooner, said, "Unfortunately, we knew this day would come. It's been a rough three years, without having Kayla," saying she's often on his mind. "I told her mother, I'm never gonna let her image go away, I want her to live forever."
