PLAINFIELD, NJ – In the United States, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January each year to pay tribute to the achievements of the non-violent Civil Rights leader and spokesperson, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  In and around Plainfield, there are events that aim to honor his memory:

The Plainfield Area NAACP will hold its Dr. MLK Program on Thursday, Jan. 12th.  The meeting will take place in the Whitney Allen Young Community Room, located at 300 Central Avenue in Plainfield. The Executive Committee will meet at 4:00 pm, and the regular session will begin at 5:00 pm.

On Saturday, Jan. 14th, Mayor Adrian O. Mapp and First Lady Amelia Mapp will host Plainfield residents in their home for the Ninth Annual MLK Food Drive and Potluck Celebration to honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  New, non-perishable food items and toiletries are being collected for the Shiloh Baptist Church Food Pantry.  Bring a potluck food dish to share with neighbors!  The location is 535 W. Eighth Street in Plainfield, from 6:00 pm to midnight.

January 11, 2017

As Donald Trump’s inauguration draws near, a number of groups are planning various events and rallies – perhaps most notably, the Women’s March on Washington. Tears Are Good, They Let The Sadness Out

January 16, 2017

Jackie Kennedy and Coretta Scott King were our nation’s role models for mourning in the 1960’s and in the decades since. They were praised for their strength and stoicism, their courage and grace, and rightly so. They were great role models for our nation at a time of great unrest and anxiety, but I would say they were not the role models we needed when it came to grieving our ...

Man vs. Waze

A lot of strange cars are traveling through my quiet neighborhood these days.  They are not driven by my neighbors.  Some mornings I even have trouble getting out of my driveway.

Waze.

Ever since bridge repair closed a major thoroughfare near my house, the traffic on my sleepy street has increased dramatically.  And it is not by accident that commuters have figured out ...

Falling by Jane Green

Falling by Jane Green (Berkley, 2016)

Every now and again I just love a mindless romance novel, and I've been a huge fan of Jane Green's since her first book, Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans. Despite being classified as “chick lit,” the character and plot of Jemima J. has stayed with me for sixteen years after first reading it because the story ...
