Superintendent of Plainfield Public Schools Anna Belin-Pyles Statement on Incident at Clark's Arthur L. Johnson High School

PLAINFIELD, NJ - On Sunday, Plainfield Public Schools Superintendent Anne Belin-Pyles issued the following statement in response to a widely reported incident that occurred before a girls varsity basketball game on Saturday in Clark:

The reports of a troubling incident preceding the recent girls basketball game between Clark and Plainfield High Schools are of great concern to our District. The Plainfield School District considers this a serious matter, and we do not condone any acts of intolerance.

When made aware of the problem at Clark, I responded quickly and took decisive action on behalf of our student-athletes and our District. I was immediately in communication with district personnel, the Superintendent of the Clark School District, Mr. Edward Grande, and the Plainfield Board of Education.

An investigation is presently under way. It is my intent to get to the bottom of this matter as expeditiously as possible. It is important that this investigation be completed objectively and comprehensively.

We teach our children in Plainfield to be tolerant and inclusive of others and we expect the same respect from all with whom we interact. Our goals for our children in this district, and I believe for all educators, are to provide environments where our children may develop into well-rounded individuals who will become thoughtful and contributing members of society without the burden of bias or intolerance.

We continue to investigate the facts underlying this matter and will present the findings as appropriate, so this matter may be properly addressed. We will provide all needed support to the students and staff exposed to the offensive display.

We want to assure our students, parents, guardians, staff and community that this incident is being thoroughly and comprehensively investigated with the seriousness it deserves.
