PLAINFIELD, NJ — Despite an 8 p.m. start time, Plainfield's Board of Education had participants wait for two hours before they ended a Zoom meeting that never began. Similar to last week, a new link was published, and residents had to scramble to both find the link and hope they could access it.

Superintendent Dr. Diana Mitchell’s comments noted a reduction of $12.6 million in state aid for the school budget. She said everything has been done to protect the classroom, as well as classroom resources, to minimize the impact on students.

Privilege of the floor was increased from 30 to 45 minutes for Monday's meeting, and the meeting ran close to 2.5 hours, before going into another executive session.

The following agenda items were not passed:

  • Item F, the appointment of Yolanda Koon as Acting School Business Administrator/Board Secretary at a prorated salary of $178,000.
  • Item C, the appointment of full-time to part-time staff for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • Item H, payment to Deborah Celestand as a consultant to provide administrative support in assessing, evaluating and developing ELA and Math Curriculum.
  • Item Z15, to approve three job descriptions: Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, Translator, and Director C&I
  • Item B 793 — Dion Roach, Principal, Plainfield High School
  • Item B 957 — Lisa Armstead, Principal
  • Z17, the Reduction in Force plan proposed and developed by the Superintendent/Chief School Administrator
  • Z18, for nurses to staff summer athletic physicals, in an amount not to exceed $17,640; with a 4-4 vote, the motion failed
  • Z19, to approve the appointment of former Business Administrator Gary Ottman as Acting Assistant School Business Administrator at a rate of $700 per day not to exceed $40,000.
