FANWOOD, NJ – It was a bitter primary campaign in which Fanwood’s two best known politicians, who live just one block away from each other, ran their own slates of candidates for the 14 Democratic Committee seats in the Borough.

Column A, “Regular Democratic Organization,” was led by Freeholder Al Mirabella, who is also the Township Manager in neighboring Scotch Plains. Column B, “People First Democrats,” was led by Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr, who is running unopposed for a record 5th term.

It started off slow.

Petitions were filed on April 1st and the campaign signs did not pop up until almost a month later. However, the final weeks of the election season, were defined by an intense “County Control” vs. “Local Control” theme, controversial mailers, and ubiquitous signs reminding voters across the Borough to vote for Column B.

The signs worked. Fanwood voters turned out in record numbers at the polls during an off-year election and overwhelmingly supported the "People First Democrats." The Column B team, was led by Mayor Mahr and three veteran Council members (Kathy Mitchell, Kevin Boris and Jeff Banks), who all ran unopposed. The slate won all 14 seats in Fanwood's seven districts by margins of 4-1 or better. In the closely watched District 6 race, Mahr and her running mate Sal Fazzino won a decisive victory over Al and Phyllis Mirabella by margins of 111-24 in favor of Mahr and 104-29 in favor of Fazzino.
