The League of Women Voters of the Plainfield Area will host a forum on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, for candidates running for Plainfield City Council in the July 7 primary election. The purpose of the forum is to enable voters to hear the candidates discuss why they’re running and which issues matter most to them.
Three candidates are running at-large: Robert K. Graham, Steve G. Hockaday, and David M. Rutherford. Two are competing to represent the Third Ward: Emily E. Morgan and Charles McRae. All candidates will appear on the July 7 ballot. This year a vote-by-mail ballot will be sent to all registered voters. Residents may register to vote at UnionCountyVotes.com.
Secretary of the LWV of the United States Toni Zimmer will moderate this first-ever virtual forum for the Plainfield league. She will explain the procedures the candidates have agreed to and introduce the candidates to the audience. The candidates will then answer questions submitted to and reviewed by the league. An additional league member will ensure the candidates comply with the rules governing the procedures and time limits for responses.
The LWV of Plainfield has a long history of hosting forums to empower voters with the knowledge they need to choose a candidate. Although this year’s event will be held online instead of in person, it will follow the league’s traditional nonpartisan, unbiased, and impartial format.
The league will provide a booklet of candidate biographies and answers to three questions that will be distributed prior to the forum. Instructions for joining this virtual public meeting and for submitting questions for the candidates to answer during the forum will be announced in the coming weeks.
