Plainfield Ends its Sesquicentennial Year with a Once in a Lifetime 150th Anniversary Culminating Gala

December 18, 2019- On Saturday, December 21, 2019, the City of Plainfield will host its 150th Anniversary Culminating Gala event at the Plainfield Performing Arts Center (PPAC). This Sesquicentennial Anniversary finale is free to all residents and their guests.

2019 has been an unforgettable year. In January, Mayor Adrian O. Mapp and First Lady Amelia Mapp greeted guests at an inaugural celebration event dressed in period wear from the 1800s. Between then and now, there have been numerous other events commemorating the sesquicentennial of Plainfield's birthday. In April, for the first time in its history, the Queen City chose a flag from among many entries sent in by contestants, and the winning entry was raised outside of City Hall, which incidentally turned 100 years old in 2019. Numerous plays, the first-ever restaurant week, a memorable 4th of July 150th float and concert, and a House Music Festival were just a few of the many ways Plainfield found to celebrate the 150th birthday of the city.

Plainfield's Anniversary would not be complete without a proper finale. The 150th Culminating Gala will be a sensory amalgamation reflecting our diversity, and celebrating history, culture, and community. Guests will enjoy dance and musical performances of varying genres and cultures, a deliciously diverse selection of hors d’oeuvres, plus appearances and remarks from state and local elected officials. There will also be a carefully curated collection of silent auction items, the proceeds of which will benefit the Mayor’s Education Initiative, Plainfield Promise.

"2019 will be remembered as one of our most memorable years," said Mayor Adrian O. Mapp. "We may not be around for the next 150th-anniversary celebration of our beloved city, but what is certain is that just as we are impacted today by decisions made by city leaders 150 years ago, what we do here today will also determine how Plainfield grows and evolves. It is both inspiring and humbling to be an integral part of shaping the history of this great city, and I believe with our celebrations, that we have paid fitting homage to the inspiring history that has shaped our Queen City. I look forward to the final celebration with anticipation."

The 150th Anniversary Culminating Gala, while free, is an RSVP-only event and is currently at capacity. Interested residents should email communications@plainfieldnj.gov to be placed on the waitlist. The City of Plainfield is thrilled to share this night with the community of family and friends that make Plainfield the great city it is today!

The 150th Anniversary Culminating Gala will take place at the new Plainfield Performing Arts Center (PPAC) at 724 Park Avenue, Plainfield, NJ, 07060 from 7:00 PM-11:00 PM.
