PLAINFIELD, NJ — Senior citizens in Plainfield who are in need of health and safety related repairs in their homes have an opportunity to apply for grants available through the Department of Health and Social Services, and all those who fit the qualifications are encouraged to apply.

Under The Safe Housing & Transportation Program (SHTP), qualifying senior citizens aged 60 years of age and older may be eligible for a grant of $500.00 to have minor health and/or safety repairs made in their homes. This can, for example, include plumbing to make faucets easier to manipulate, electrical for improved lighting, and a grab bar and railing installations in bathrooms. Simple home modifications and adaptive devices can help seniors, especially those with impaired mobility and with disabilities continue to be independent in their homes.

According to the CDC, every minute of every day someone 65 years or older falls in the United States. That means one out of four older Americans will fall each year, and falling once doubles an older adult’s chances of falling again. Falls are just one safety area of concern for seniors and minor home modifications can help.
