NETHERWOOD HEIGHTS HOUSE TOUR: “PAST & PRESENT”
An educational house tour of Plainfield’s Netherwood Heights neighborhood, featuring historic homes built as early as 1894. The Netherwood Heights Neighbors, a non-profit community group are sponsoring a tour of seven historic Plainfield homes, built from 1894 through 1929. Come celebrate the 150th anniversary of Plainfield’s incorporation by visiting some of its earliest residences, and learning how the city transformed from a rural village to a fashionable suburb for America’s post-Civil War elite.
The tour will celebrate the fascinating past of the neighborhood while giving a glimpse at how the homes have evolved to meet the needs of everyday modern life. The neighborhood in which the tour takes place was once largely defined by the location of Netherwood Hotel. It was the brainchild of a group of wealthy men who formed the Belvidere Land and Improvement Company in 1874. They purchased the land from New Jersey Central Railroad with an eye to develop an upscale hotel. The building was an imposing four-story structure of red brick on a massive stone foundation. Its combination of broad verandas, white columns, turrets, and Victorian gingerbread defied even its designer’s efforts to describe its style.
Though lost to time, it is remembered as the captivating force that lured the New York City elite to visit...and eventually stay and build their homes.
