PISCATAWAY, NJ — Nijer Reaves, 20 of Piscataway has been arrested on vehicular homicide charges for an Oct. 6 head-on collision that killed a motorcyclist on Stelton Road, said Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Christopher L.C. Kuberiet and Piscataway Police Chief, Michael McLaughlin on Friday.

Reaves’s charges were upgraded to vehicular homicide in the second degree after the motorcyclist, John Shlyk, 64 died Oct. 22 from injuries he suffered in the crash, said police. 

Reaves had already been given 11 motor vehicle summonses including careless and reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to maintain lane and speeding, said police.

Investigators determined that on Oct. 6, at about 6:47 am, Reaves was driving a 2017 Toyota Corolla southbound on Stelton Road when she crossed into oncoming traffic near Hamilton Blvd. and Woodrow Ave., crashing head-on into Shlyk’s 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle which was headed north, said police. 

Shlyk, who was also a Piscataway resident was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick in serious condition, where he later died from his injuries, said police.

Reaves is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center pending a Nov. 19 court appearance.
