PLAINFIELD, NJ — It’s Fire Prevention Week, sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association since 1922, and a national public health observance since 1925. It is celebrated annually in Plainfield with a parade and safety fair; however, Fire Director Kenneth Childress said due to COVID-19, this year’s educational festivities have been canceled.

"The COVID-19 virus has forced us to reconsider many of the regular activities originally planned to take place in 2020. At this time, we are potentially facing a second wave, and we must adhere to all hygiene protocols as we work to control it," Director Childress said. "With this in mind, the Fire Department chooses to exercise the utmost caution and cancel the Annual Fair. Our primary concern is the safety and welfare of our Plainfield children, and, by extension, their families who usually attend this event. We must also safeguard our staff’s health and wellness, which we depend on for front line protection each day."

He added, "We look forward to hosting this event each year and making it bigger and better in 2021. As always, we continue to find new and innovative avenues to reach our Plainfield community. We will work hard to ensure that every resident gets timely safety messages and updates through all media channels available."

According to the NFPA, every 24 seconds, a fire department responds to a fire somewhere in the nation; a fire occurs in a structure at the rate of one every 65 seconds, and a home fire occurs every 93 seconds. Seventy-five percent of all fire deaths and 73 percent of all injuries were caused by home fires. And in 2019, local fire departments responded to 1.3 million fires that caused 3,700 civilian deaths, 16,600 civilian injuries and $14.8 billion in property damage.

This year's FPW campaign is Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!TM. Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries, and unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen. Learn more here.
