UNION COUNTY, NJ - The American Hiking Society established Take A Hike Day, each year falling on Nov. 17, as a way to encourage families and individuals to get outside, and to connect with nature.
Freewalkers, a non-profit walking group, is challenging people to collectively hike 1,000 miles or more this Saturday to observe Take A Hike Day, and you're invited.
Locally, Freewalkers will lead a 2 to 3-hour hike in Watchung Reservation, one of America’s first county parks. The reservation includes scenic sites like the Deserted Village and Lake Surprise. Meet at Trailside Nature & Science Center, 452 New Providence Rd., in Mountainside at 9:30 a.m.
You can register here for this free event.
Other guide-led events will take place in the following locations:
- George Washington Bridge/Palisades Park, NJ
- Schuylkill River Trail, Philadelphia, PA
- Spanish Moss Trail, Beaufort, SC
- Bay Area Walk, San Francisco, CA
Although you may not be able to make it to one of the organized events, you can still participate. The Freewalkers are encouraging people to walk or hike on their own, and log miles at www.Freewalkers.org.
