This September, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, together with the Feeding America® nationwide network of food banks, mobilizes in an effort to bring an end to hunger. Hunger Action Month is designed to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of the fact that 42 million Americans, including 1 million New Jerseyans, face hunger every day.
Hunger Action Day, September 14, is a day when efforts across the country are focused for greater impact. This Hunger Action Day, Ocean State Job Lot joined us by kicking off its annual giving campaign with a food donation of 35,000 pounds to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.
Ocean State Job Lot, a 127-store discount retail chain headquartered in Rhode Island and now in its 40th anniversary year, announced the 2017 Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation’s Three Square Meals hunger-relief program throughout the Northeast. The program will distribute more than 200 tractor-trailer loads of food throughout the year to 19 food banks and pantries which, in turn, distribute nourishing food to people in need in their communities.
Funds for Three Square Meals are raised between November and December through a combination of in-store customer donations at the register, contributions from the business community and matching funds from the Job Lot Charitable Foundation. Job Lot then leverages its wholesale buying power and retailing expertise to purchase food at significant value. Food items to be distributed include pasta, cereal, canned vegetables and fruit, soup, canned tuna, dried beans, rice, and more.

This food will reach people in our communities who struggle with hunger every day.”
