One Dead in Cranford House Fire Saturday Morning

CRANFORD, NJ – A senior woman and her dog are dead after a fire early Saturday morning tore through a home on the border of Cranford and Garwood, according to Assistant Chief John Scalzadonna of the Garwood Fire Department.

The name of the victim has not been released.

The home is located on the 400 block of Brookside Place. No one else was inside the home at that time.

The fire began at approximately 5:50 a.m. in the back of the home, Scalzadonna said.

“The bulk of the fire was out within a half hour,” Scalzadonna said. “At least five departments were on scene.”

The house was heavily damaged on the back right side, he said. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

As of 9:30 a.m., officials from Cranford, Linden and Union County were still on scene.
