For the first time since giving out the Athlete-of-the-Month award, Rho Eta Sigma, the student newspaper of Rahway High School, has awarded the female honor to a team of four, the indoor track team’s girls 4x200 relay.

Nominated by Coach Leon Bunion, the four girls are Jodi Alston, Ka’Rynn Hill, Alexis Peterson, and Alexus Smith.

The girls broke the school indoor 4x200 record with a time of 1:43:43 at this year’s Eastern States Invitational. The time was the fourth fastest in the state this season and the third fastest time in Union County history. Here’s what the girls had to say about being selected as Athletes-of-the-Month.

Jodi Alston: I feel very honored to be selected. My future goals are to make it to Nationals in college, excel in my track career, and to maintain an A average in all of my classes. I would like to thank my parents because without them pushing me and encouraging me to work hard I would not be the person I am today. I want to thank, too, all of my coaches—Mr. Bunion, Ms. Bunion, Mr. Sumter, and Mr. Johnson.

Ka’Rynn Hill: My teammates and I work very hard to be good at something we love and getting recognition for that lets me know we’re doing something right. My goal is to graduate high school with high honors go to a great college with an amazing track program and get multiple degrees. I’d like to thank my family and my parents who always support me in everything I do.

Alexis Paterson: Next year I will be a senior and will make that year count both athletically and academically. I’d like to thank all my coaches, especially Coach Johnson, for pushing me to go out there and have fun and put everything I have into track. Also, my dad, Randy Peterson, for being my No. 1 supporter and doing everything to help me succeed.

Alexus Smith: I would just like to thank all my coaches for believing in me and pushing me to do my best. They motivate me to reach past my limits and to try my hardest even on a bad day. I would also like to thank my teammates for always supporting me.

The entire Rahway community offers congratulations to each girl for their collective accomplishments
as a team and wishes the track team in general much-continued success as the spring season
draws to a close.
