Union County College Welcomes New Dean of Students

Union's Dean of Students Mensah Peterson

Union County College welcomes Mensah Peterson as the new Dean of Students. Mr. Peterson returns to Union after having served for two years at Fairleigh Dickinson University as the Associate Director of Athletics for Administration.

Mr. Peterson was previously employed at Union for eight years. During this time, he held three different positions with his final role as the Assistant Director of Student Success Initiatives. In this position, he supervised a staff of 10 at the College’s Elizabeth campus, oversaw a retention alert tool, developed and oversaw new student orientations, trained new hires in the Advising, Career, and Transfer Services, and collaborated with faculty members to incorporate advising outcomes in the curriculum.

In his subsequent role at FDU, Mr. Peterson was the communications liaison between the Athletics Department and other university departments including Admissions, Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, and Residence Life. He supervised a number of sports teams, more than 15 athletic coaches, and all areas related to the budgets and management associated with NCAA teams.

As the Dean of Students at Union, Mr. Peterson reports to the Vice President of Student Development and is responsible for the following areas: academic testing, community outreach, dual enrollment and college readiness programs; commencement and first year student convocation; new student programming; retention programs for minority students groups; and student conduct. In this role, Mr. Peterson will also serve as the College’s Title IX deputy coordinator helping to ensure the College’s compliance with federal regulations and laws that affect students.

“Dean Peterson is a great asset to the college and we welcome his return. His knowledge of Union from previous experience, combined with his leadership skills and comprehensive understanding of community colleges, makes him an excellent choice for the Dean of Students position,” stated Union’s President Margaret M. McMenamin.

Mr. Peterson is currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership at Rowan University. He has his Master’s degree in Counseling and his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, both from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
