UNION, NJ – Students from all over Union County will be walking from Burnet Middle School to Town Hall on Saturday morning, March 24, in an anti-gun violence march.

Led by steering committee chairman Colin Sumner, the march, which has the support of Senator Joseph Cryan, Moms Demand Action, Union County Chapter, and the Union County Freeholders, is not aimed at taking away guns, but ending gun violence, according to a press release from march organizers.

Students have always been the catalysts for change in this country, read the press release.  “Today, we want Congress to make us all safer, and counter all forms of gun violence by being open to the national student led dialogue. Hand in hand we will stand, together, and united.”

Sumner, 16, a sophomore at Westfield High School, said, “I’m organizing this march to take action on a topic that greatly affects me and my peers.”  He said students from all across the county will be marching with parents, teachers, clergy and public officials.

“I am honored to stand with these young adults,” said Cryan.  “They have a message and they intend to have their voices heard.  I am proud of their efforts and support them.”

“The Township of Union is honored to be the host of the March for Our Lives in Union County to let our children and young adults know we stand with them,” said Union Mayor Suzette Cavadas.  “Our Township is committed to the safety of our youth; committed to building and protecting safe communities and committed to protecting our public spaces.”

“I hope true change can come from this march,” said Sumner.  “Not only for Union County, but the country.  I hope that as a national movement of marches continues, we will make a change.”

Moms Demand Action, Union County Chapter, co-leader Jessica Grant said they support the march and have helped with logistics, but "we don't want to take the lead.  This is a student-led movement.  People need to hear what the kids have to say."

The march begins at 10:00 a.m. at Burnet Middle School, 1000 Caldwell Avenue.  It will end at Union’s Town Hall, 1976 Morris Avenue.  “Anyone looking to protect American children by strengthening our laws and stand with the victims of all shootings inside places of education, are invited and welcomed.”
