RANDOLPH,NJ- While many residents have noticed the new addition to Shongum’s Fire Station they may not have noticed the new planter surrounding the flagpole. The new planter was planned, designed and carried out by Boy Scout Vivek Thampi of Troop 53.
Thampi is a senior at Randolph High School and a Volunteer Fireman at Shongum’s Fire Station. For his Eagle Scout project, he chose to do the planter for the newly remodeled Fire Station. Eagle projects are required to earn Boys Scout’s top rank of Eagle and must benefit the community or organizations other than Boy Scouts.
Thampi, currently a Life Scout, enlisted the help of family, scout leaders and fellow Troop 53 scouts as labor for the week long project. Approximately 210 man hours were invested in building the new planter. He also reached out to RP Smith and Son of Succasuna. The company generously donated the hardscape materials for the project: sand, gravel, stones and pavers. Dering’s Garden Supply, also in Succasuna, provided all the planting materials including the beautiful shrubs that surround the flagpole. Miguel from Mac Construction donated time, technical support and supplied specialty tools needed for the project.
Shongum’s Fire Station Captain Jeff Novak, said Thampi took the time at the beginning of his project to meet with them to ask about some of the Fire Station’s needs and where he might be able to contribute.
After sharing several options, they settled on the landscaping component around the new flagpole. Thampi continued to gather input on desired function and design of the area. Taking all that into account, he went back to the fire station with a proposed design, which is what he used to move forward.
Captain Novak stated, “Vivek, the other scouts, and parents did a tremendous job. The flag area really looks fabulous now, and it's going to be a lasting contribution to the Fire Station and the neighborhood.”
