Ah spring! It’s the season that brings increasing daylight, warming temperatures, and the rebirth of flora and fauna. Even though old man winter is holding on tightly, spring will gain a foothold and take over soon.
April can be a hectic month in the garden. Here are some checklists to keep you organized:
v Clean up the garden in preparation for the season ahead: Remove last year's dead plants, rake back winter mulches, and top-dress beds with compost.
v Keep ahead of the weeds.
v Turn the compost.
v Test and amend your soil
v Prune flowering shrubs when they finish blooming.
v Plant and divide perennials
v Start seeds of warm-season vegetables and flowers.
v Direct seed cool season vegetables and flowers when the ground is able to be worked.
v Begin hardening off cool season seedlings, to transplant at the end of the month.
v Begin dividing perennials.
