RANDOLPH, NJ- The Randolph Tri-Harder Kid’s Triathlon at Harbor Hills Day Camp enjoyed a very solid turnout this year despite the iffy weather early on Saturday morning.

130 kids ages 4-12 were divided into four age groups of two heats each, and raced the competition for the community spirit, athleticism, and the fun of it.  Each heat began with a lap across the pool, then a quick transition, with the help of the parents, to the bikes.

A stretch of Doby Rd. from Harbor Hills to Heistein Park, was closed on either end for the event and served as the track.  The third leg of the race consisted of a grueling run down and back the same way they had biked, but the home stretch was well lined with parents cheering on their racers.

Brothers Alex, age 9, and Brandon, 10, still a little out of breathe after finishing the race, said they both had a great time.  Brandon said without a doubt he did his best on the biking.  Alex said, “My best event I think was actually the running today.  I think it was the running or the biking.”

They travelled from Clifton to take part and plan to compete at the next Tri-Harder Triathlon in Denville next week.

Gavin, age 6, came in first in the 4-6 age group, biking in 7:35 said he would have to train up for next year when he will be competing in an older age group.

Accompanied by family who held homemade signs along her route, Lucia, 6, was one of the top finishers.  This was her first year in the competition after watching her brother compete last year.  She was quiet about her achievement but said she swam the backstroke, and that she would be back next year with plenty of practice in the meantime.

Helping to hand out the medals at the finish line, Christina Martinez said, “It’s important to build some self esteem.  When I heard about this I thought ‘this is cool, I want to be a part of this.”

The event was the fourth of six summer Tri-Harder Kid’s Triathlons, and was co-sponsored by the Randolph Recreation Department, Marty’s Reliable Cycle, and Harbor Hills Day Camp.
