RANDOLPH, NJ- As The Mayo Center for the Performing Arts in Morristown has recognized three Randolph musicians as Music Students of the Month in May. Two Randolph students have been recognized as outstanding band members and one student as an outstanding percussionist.
Randolph High School junior Michael DeMelfi, a tuba and sousaphone player, will be recognized by the arts center. Michael plays in the Randolph High School top ensemble, the Wind Ensemble. He is also a member and sousaphone section leader of the Marching Rams. He has played or currently also plays in Symphonic Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble I and Pit Orchestra. Outside of RHS, Mike has been selected for North Jersey Area Band for the past three years and the Region I Symphonic Band this past January. In addition, Michael was also accepted for and marched with Macy's Great American Marching Band this past Thanksgiving.
Eighth grade trumpet player Paul Recchia will also be recognized by the Mayo Center and Randolph Middle School eighth grade percussionist Spencer Gaffney will be recognized as a May student of the month by the Mayo Center at its May 12 performance of the Kudu Drummers.
Paul said he is very excited about this opportunity. “I am very proud and happy,” Paul said. “I want to improve as a musician and I want to play the trumpet more.” Paul is a member of the middle school concern band and jazz ensemble.
Spencer is a percussionist in the Randolph Middle School 8th Grade Band and RMS Percussion Ensemble and said he was not expecting this honor and looks forward to seeing the Shanghai Drummers perform. Spencer also plays piano in the RMS Jazz Ensemble.
