RANDOLPH, NJ- Sophomore defenseman Ray McNamara picked a good time to tally his first varsity goal, scoring halfway through the second period to lead Randolph hockey to a 2-1 victory over Morris Knolls in the Mennen Cup Semifinals.
Holding onto a 1-0 lead, McNamara was assisted by fellow sophomore Justin Harper when he put the puck past Knolls goalie Ty Franchetta at 9:12 of the second period to give the Rams a 2-0 cushion. The goal, McNamara’s first on the varsity ice, ended up being the game winner and one of the biggest goals so far in a stellar 2017-18 season for Randolph.
JT Zangara had given Randolph a 1-0 lead in the first period, assisted by senior captain Will Zimmer. Knolls kept battling down the stretch, and made things interesting when they scored at 9:42 of the third to cut the lead to 2-1. But Rams goalie Scott Kimiecik would not allow anything else past him, making 14 saves on the game and helping Randolph advance to the Mennen Cup finals.
Franchetta was peppered in net by the Rams offense to the tune of 36 shots, saving 34 in the game. Randolph plays Morristown-Beard in the finals, set for Friday Feb.16 at 5:45 pm.
