Mt. Freedom Jewish Center Honors Synagogue Leaders at Purim Gala

RANDOLPH, NJ- The revered Rabbi Hillel, instructed, “Do not separate yourself from the community” and Dr. Larry Weinstein, Mendham and Mrs. Audrey Silverberg, New Vernon have taken that sage’s guidance to heart.

On Saturday, March 10, these two will be recognized by their synagogue, the Mt. Freedom Jewish Center, Randolph at the annual Purim Gala as shining examples of community connection and volunteerism.

Dr. Weinstein, a plastic surgeon with an Aesthetic and Reconstructive surgery practice in Chester will be the leadership honoree of the evening, and Mrs. Silverberg will be awarded the Shamash Award for her outstanding contributions to community life at the Mt. Freedom Jewish Center.

Sherry Pollack, president of the Mt. Freedom Jewish Center says that the synagogue has “great pride” in honoring Dr. Larry Weinstein, “not just for his commitment to this synagogue but his commitment to the larger community and global humanity.”

Dr. Weinstein has been a member of the synagogue for 21 years and has been involved in many levels of leadership, serving as Board member, VP of the Board and eventually as President. As President, Larry oversaw substantial changes to the synagogue, most importantly, overseeing the search for our beloved rabbi, Menashe East who has been in that post for eight years.

Not only generous to the MTFJC, Larry has also served on many hospital boards and committees, having served as President of the American Cancer Society (Somerset) and Chief of Plastic Surgery at Morristown Medical Center.  In addition, Dr. Weinstein is currently on the Board of the Rabbinical College of America, Morristown.

Dr. Weinstein utilizes his unique surgical skills to improve the lives of people far away from Morris County. Since 1993, Dr. Weinstein has made journeys to India where he performs challenging cleft lip repairs, bringing smiles to those who have never smiled before. In impoverished communities, these children are sometimes left to die and by repairing this congenital defect, they become more acceptable to their families and communities.

Mrs. Audrey Silverberg, since arriving at the MTFJC in 1994, came to understand that, “Volunteerism transforms the community, and it also transforms those who give”. During her tenure as Sisterhood president, Audrey has redefined the synagogue Sisterhood into Kolot (Hebrew meaning, “women’s voices”).  This vital group’s mission is to continue to assist in the synagogue’s larger goals, but additionally and importantly, it is to guide and nurture the congregation’s women.

Audrey encourages members to reach a higher potential. New member Rachel Sakofs observes that Audrey’s “commitment to the spiritual growth of the women of MTFJC and the creativity she pours into each program is truly inspiring,” adding, “I want to connect with her on a deep level whenever I see her.”

Audrey has brought her love of art and children to the Rosh Chodesh directed monthly Kolot programs and to the “Lunch and Art” sessions she leads for the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy, Livingston and her Art Appreciation 8th grade class at the day school.

Audrey seeks ways to add beauty to the sanctuary and service from arranging flowers on Shavuot to creating a banner with daughter Sarah, for the NYC Israel Day Parade.

Both honorees point to their supportive families in their journeys as synagogue volunteers.
Dr. Weinstein is married to Beverly Zagofsky, a licensed professional counselor, and they have two children: Joshua, a filmmaker and director of the recently acclaimed film, “Menashe” and Melanie Zoey Weinstein, a playwright and performer.

Mrs. Silverberg is married to Dr. Fred Silverberg and they have two daughters: Leana, a graduate student at Brandeis University and Sarah, a solider with the Israeli Army (IDF).

Now on March 10, in honor of the festive holiday of Purim, their synagogue community will joyfully dance a hora in their honor and say, “Thank you” to two richly deserving community members.

For information on this event, please contact David at the synagogue office: 973-895-2100,  office@mtfjc.org or visit our Facebook page.
