RANDOLPH, NJ- The Randolph girls came to Central Park of Morris County, at the old Greystone property, on a mission to win the NJAC Championships.
It was a title that eluded them the last two years after winning in 2013, the same year the team went on to win the NJ Meet of champions as the #1 team in New Jersey.
With record high temperatures it was not a day for fast times but the Lady Rams were ready to compete. Sophomore Abby Loveys dominated the race right from the start as she went through the first mile in 5:38 and never looked back, winning easily in 18:40 for the 5k distance. Junior Brooke Olson followed in 3rd place as Randolph crammed 4 girls in the top 11 and won the team title over second place Mendham 47-81.
Freshman Meredith ran a strong race finishing 7th followed by junior Kate Gihorski with a solid 11th place finish. Senior Alison Freitas ran her best race of the season and rounded out the scoring at 25th overall out of 92 finishers.
While the team championship was the highlight of the day, the Randolph girls had several other notable performances. The JV team also won the team title partly by placing 4 girls in the top 10 (out of 170 finishers) led by freshman Avalina Michel who won by a comfortable margin. Milche was followed by sophomore Clare Ahrens at 3rd, senior Heather Olson at 5th and sophomore Kaitlyn Attinello at 10th. Not to be outdone, freshman Marina Holihan took 3rd in the Freshman/Sophomore 4k race.
The Morris County Championships are next Tuesday Oct. 25 at Greystone. Randolph hopes to continue their winning ways before moving on to the State meets. The girls are currently ranked 20th in the state.
