RANDOLPH, NJ- The Randolph Girls Cross Country team continued their winning ways taking home the Group 4 State Sectional Championship at Garret Mountain on Saturday November 5th.
Bergen County rival Ridgewood had taken home the title the last two years so Randolph was eager to grab it back. Expecting a close competition the girls turned it into a romp winning by 60 points 47-107.
They were once again led by Morris County champion, sophomore Abby Loveys who finished 2nd with a time of 19:00 followed closely by junior Brooke Olson who had her best race of the season at 19:02. Freshman Meredith Finley continued her rapid development as she rallied to achieve the 2-3-4 finish that Randolph was hoping for.
Junior Kate Gihorski ran a gutsy race for 17th and senior captain Alison Freitas had another tremendous finish coming in 21st and completing the team scoring.
Rams coach Kevin Higgins commented on his captain, stating, “While this years’ Randolph team is very strong up front, Alison has been a big difference maker improving over a minute from last season and helping our team win championships.”
Freshman Avalina Michel finished 41st and has been a great addition to the team working her way into the top seven and improving every week. Senior Courtney Darakjy finished strong despite feeling under the weather.
The Randolph girls have gradually moved up in the rankings from 20th to 17th to 11th and finally to 7th in the entire state of New Jersey. After their sectional performance they should move into the top 5.
Saturday November 12 brings the Group Championships in Holmdel where the girls hope to advance as a team to the State Meet of Champions.
