RANDOLPH, NJ- The New Jersey high school state track championships were held in a series of meets over the past three weekends. The first round was the Sectional Championships, followed by the Group Championships and culminated in the State Meet of Champions this past Saturday, June 10.

Randolph athletes made their marks all along the way with many impressive results. The girls’ team completed their year long sweep of the 10 conference, county and state sectional team championships for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track for the first time in school history. In a competitive team battle at Sectionals with Ridgewood, the Randolph girls came out on top by a score of 146-120.

The Rams were led by sophomore Meghan O’Malley who won all three jumping events and recorded a 4th place finish in the 100 hurdles. Freshman Karen Hull won the 100, was 2nd in the 100 hurdles and finished 3rd in both the 200 and long jump.

Sophomore Abby Loveys was part of three victories, winning the individual 800 and 1600, and as part of the 4x800 relay team. Loveys was part of a 1-2-3 finish in the 1600 along with teammates Brooke Olson and Meredith Finley. Olsen also won the 3200 meter run for the final Randolph individual victory.

The boys finished second in a close team battle with Ridgewood by a score of 79-73. The lone winner was Tana Gawe in the 400 hurdles but the Rams received points from a number of athletes most notably Kenan Mitchell, Josh Taylor and Josh Holihan.

At the Group championships on June 2nd and 3rd the Rams traveled to Egg Harbor to compete against the top Group IV athletes in NJ. The top 6 finishers in each event plus wild cards advanced to the State Meet of Champions.

Kenan Mitchell advanced on the boys side in the pole vault and 5 girls made it through. Meghan O’Malley continued her stellar sophomore season placing in the long jump, triple jump and high jump. Freshman Meredith Finley made it through as a wild card in the 1600 with her best performance of the season running 5:02.99. Junior Brooke Olson ran her best 3200 of the season finishing 3rd overall with a personal best of 10:59.

Loveys also advanced to the Meet of Champions in 3 events – the 800, 1600 and 4x800 relay. Loveys turned in the most outstanding Randolph performance of the meet as she finished 3rd in the 1600 with an outstanding time of 4:52, one of the fastest times in school history. Later that same evening Loveys teamed up with Olsen, Finley and senior Courtney Darakjy in the 4x800 relay and the team had their best time of the year finishing 5th overall in 9:27 and advanced to the Meet of Champions.

The Meet of Champions was held on Saturday June 10th at Northern Burlington Regional High School on a very hot day. All of the Randolph athletes competed well and once again Loveys was Randolph’s top performer finishing 3rd overall in the 1600 breaking 5 minutes for the 5th time this season. This completed an outstanding season for Randolph track and field with many great performances and with great optimism for future seasons.
