RANDOLPH, NJ-  The Randolph High School chapter of the National English Honor Society inducted 59 new members in a beautiful ceremony in the high school auditorium. Humanities Director of Instruction Ben Horwitz thanked Advisor Brooke Pasiak for inviting him to speak and congratulated the inductees. "Your accomplishments thus far as English students are worthy of commendation," Horwitz told students and parents at the ceremony on September 27. "NEHS is not really about tonight's induction, but rather it's about all of the amazing things that you will do as a member."

Horwitz noted that as English students, their teachers have "preached the importance of the 'so what'" "The 'so what' is your opportunity to explain the importance of your ideas. It's a chance to synthesize and make connections. Your 'so what' is your opportunity to contribute something new and meaningful to a topic that that has been explored thousands of times before, but never in the unique way that you see it. Your 'so what' is what you get to make your own personal impact."

RHS NEHS chapter president Chris Nessel thanked administrators, teachers, volunteers, parents and students. "You may not realize it now, but this is your gateway," he told inductees. "This is more than an honors society. This is more than a resume builder. This is an opportunity. We want to all ow you to express yourself and share your talent. You can learn so much, not only from us, but from the people around you.

The new members were each invited to join the society. Members are selected for their accomplishments in the field of English and for their overall academic achievement. Members must pay dues, compete at least four hours of community service related to literacy and be academic and professional role models in their school community.

The students were called up individually to the stage where they accepted a certificate and shook hands with RHS NEHS President Chris Nessel. Afterwards, they each recited the society's pledge.

The diner became a ...
