RANDOLPH, NJ - The official kickoff of the 2014 New Jersey high school cross-country season is tomorrow. The Randolph invitational is the fall season's opening event taking place at Freedom Park.
Dyestat.com, which bills itself as the "Internet home of high school track & field, and cross country," released its Top 100 national high school girls cross-country teams for 2014. Randolph is ranked No. 24 in the nation, and other rankings have the Rams No. 1 in New Jersey.
Randolph returns its top four girls who collectively dominated the 2013 season. All-State selection and 2013 Nike National Finalist Liz Lansing leads the group. She's joined by a super-talented trio in Carol Harsch, Nora May McSorley and Margaret Thompson.
In last year's Meet of Champions, Thompson earned herself a memorable spot in Randolph sports history and New Jersey cross country lore when she ran most of the race with one shoe. After getting stepped on and losing her shoe one mile in, she ran the last two miles of the grass and gravel course with a painful cut and bleeding foot, and somehow managed a personal-best time. The points she accumulated helped Randolph secure its first-ever Meet of Champions victory.
As a side note, there will be no parking allowed at freedom Park on Saturday for the meet. Spectators must park at Randolph High School, where buses will shuttle them back and forth to Freedom Park.
