RANDOLPH, NJ-  Superintendent Jenn Fano made this statement regarding the tragedy in Florida on Wednesday:  “We are deeply saddened by the school shooting tragedy in Florida.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.  We are taking this opportunity to once again review all our protocols in the Randolph School District to ensure that we are doing everything possible to be proactive.  Of course, we continue to work closely with law enforcement officials for their input and direction.”

 Below are emails sent to parents by both The Middle School and High School Principals on Thursday:

Dear RMS Community,

Sign Up for E-News

Yesterday’s events in Florida were horrific. The physical and emotional safety of your child has always been and will continue to be our primary focus. I am writing to reassure you that your child is safe at RMS.

My administration, staff and security team consisting of ex-police officers are aware of the profile of individuals who commit this violence.  We have various systems in place including, but not limited to: video surveillance, locked exterior doors, on-site full time security, and frequent visits by the Randolph Police Department.

Additionally, we conduct various safety drills with students and staff with the intent of identifying areas that may require improvement.

Finally, we rely on students, parents, and community members to provide us with information regarding “odd” behavior of others, as well as social media posts and verbal statements that are “disturbing”.  Once information is received, investigations are swiftly conducted in collaboration with school officials, local and State law enforcement.

You can assist us by:

  • Monitoring your child's social media accounts.
  • Adhering to all school safety protocols regarding: parking, visiting a school, and student sign in/out procedures.
  • Sharing any concerns with school administration or school counselors.

As a parent, you can feel completely confident that your child is safe at RMS. Our prayers are with the families of the students and teachers in Florida.

Kind regards.

Dr. Copeland

Dear RHS School Community;

Watching the news Wednesday evening was extremely troublesome  - to see yet again - a school and community in turmoil because of a shooting.  It prompted me to reach out to all of you to let you know that we continue to review and practice our security protocols.  Please remind your children to be aware of their surroundings at all times while in school and to have a plan of what to do in the event of a violent situation.  While reaching for a cell phone might be an instinct, please stress the need to get safe first and foremost.   Encourage your children to share with you any activity on social media that is concerning.  Provide that information to either the school or if warranted the police department.  I assure you that any and all situations will be addressed immediately.  Our police department works in tandem with our schools and you may see an increased presence around our building which should not be alarming ~ it is merely our PD working collaboratively with our schools.

We will continue to practice our active shooter drills with our students.  Our police department will be on hand during many of these drills to continue to provide us with feedback.   It truly saddens me to have to speak of these types of events, however we would be remiss if we did not.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation and continued attention to our security protocols.  We are here to address any and all questions or concerns.

Mrs. Iosso
