RANDOLPH, NJ- The Randolph Rage girls travel fastpitch softball program won two titles at the 10th annual Rich Atalese Memorial Softball Tournament, held May 21 in Long Valley.
The age 12 & under team avenged an earlier loss by defeating Jefferson, 11-7, in the tournament championship. The 12U team defeated Voorhees, 14-2, in their first game of the day, then lost to Jefferson, 17-4. But they came back to beat Maplewood-South Orange, 13-6, to claim a berth in the tournament championship, where they defeated Jefferson behind a strong performance from pitcher Melanie Koo and excellent infield defense. Koo pitched a complete game in the finale and helped her cause with two hits, a single and a double. Sydney Bibbo, hitting leadoff, drew three walks and scored two runs, and Anna Cacciacarne and Emily Hirschfeld each had two hits. Rebecca Hai had three hits in the first game and two in the second game, including a triple. Hirschfeld also led the Rage by drilling seven home runs in the tournament's Home Run Derby.
The age 10 & under team was a perfect 4-0 on the day, beating Del Val Lightning, 17-2; B-Town Bombers, 11-1; and Long Valley, 10-4, to run their winning streak to 17 straight games. In the championship, they faced Long Valley again and won, 9-1. Madeline Garretson retired the first 13 batters in a row before giving up a walk in the 5th inning; her bid for a no-hitter ended in the final inning on a clean single to center field. She finished the game allowing one run on two hits and two walks while fanning 10 in six innings. Garretson had four hits on the day, including a triple. Madison Molina, Samantha Niewiarowski, and Aishlyn Cassells each had five hits. Allie Chupak went 3-for-6 with seven walks, scoring six runs. Lizzy Morgievich tripled and knocked in six runs on the day. Autumn Liebhauser and Rebecca Dasti each had four hits. Keira Ferraro had two hits and two RBIs, and Hannah Bermudez reached base seven times, scoring three runs. Kate Gilligan had an RBI single and scored four runs, drawing six walks.
