RANDOLPH, NJ- There are many cliché’s about finding the positive in a negative situation, for example “Every dark cloud has a silver lining”.  While the global pandemic caused by COVID-19 has brought dark clouds and hardship to many people all over the world, it has also spawned new ideas and created opportunities - or silver linings - for others.  Such is the case for Randolph based “Say It With A Yard Card” a new business launched by residents Danielle Marck and Maria Karol.

“My daughter just turned 16, and Maria’s daughter is graduating 8th Grade this year, so we wanted to do something special for them because the lockdown took away most traditional celebrations,” said Marck.  “We looked into the yard cards and found that no one was offering that service in this area. So, we thought this would be something nice to offer to the community especially now during the pandemic and hopefully beyond that.”

Marck is the Director of Events for the Embassy Suites Berkeley Heights, specializing in Weddings and Mitzvahs, so this new venture was a natural fit for her.  Karol has worked for Henry O. Baker insurance agency for the last 20 years, and for her, the business provides the creative outlet she has been looking for.

“We met 10 years ago when we teamed up to lead our daughters Girl Scout troop,” said Karol.  “Starting Say It With A Yard Card was something we knew we could do together and do it successfully.”

Having both lived in Randolph for many years, Marck’s daughter is now a sophomore at Morris County School of Technology, while Karol has two daughters, currently an eighth grader and a sophomore at Randolph.

“Our girls have been a huge help and this business has been a blessing in disguise,” said Karol.  “They have been so excited to help create the designs with us, and they look forward to coming along for the set-ups and the breakdowns.  In fact, they get disappointed if we have night off.  The time this has given us to spend with our daughters is something we are so grateful for.”

Customized sayings, accents, and messages are all available, along with emoji’s, sports items, fun signs for gamers, and fun foods such as tacos and donuts.   When a client places an order, they are asked certain questions such as favorite colors, foods, hobbies, and more, and then ideas are pulled from inventory to design their greeting.

There are many reasons for people to celebrate and share their excitement with their neighbors.  Say it With a Yard Card is perfect for Birthdays, Anniversaries, Graduations, Mitzvahs, and Sweet 16’s.

It is a great way to announce a new baby, a unique way to “pop the question” or ask someone to prom, or to boast your child’s sport jersey number with a sign saying, “Let’s go Rams”.

“My son was thrilled to see that his birthday was acknowledged in such a big way - Go big or go home!” said Meredith Curley, who recently used the service for her son’s 10th birthday.  “The website was easy to use, and their response time was quick. The neighbors knew it was his special day and responded with cheers, messages, and song.  It will be one for the memory books.”

Other customers have used the service for more unique messages, such as a friend battling cancer being surprised with a sign that reads “you got this” or “cancer free”.  Father’s Day “Dad you Rock”, Mother’s Day, Adoption Day “Gotcha Day!”, Welcome Home for new homeowners or for any other reason people want to celebrate.  They will tailor each Yard Card to their client’s unique wants and needs, and anyone can request a completely custom greeting if they want.

“The experience was terrific, I was a little behind the 8-ball but Danielle and her team were still able to make it happen on a short timeline,” said Cindy Conoran, who gifted a card to her friends daughter.  “The result was better than I expected, friends, neighbors, and especially the birthday girl were over the moon.  Some friends have asked me to gift their children the same thing.”

The signs are rented for a 24-hour period and can be kept up for multiple days.  They do not sell the signs as they are custom-made for their business, however they plan to start offering for Mitzvah Yard Cards - the option to add a customized sign of the child’s logo for the party which will be a keepsake.

“We are hoping to spread a little joy throughout the town, this is something new and different that we hope the community embraces,” said Marck.  “We live in this community, we are raising our families in this community and it truly brings us joy each and every time we set up a greeting in someone’s yard.  We like to think that we are spreading joy one-yard card at a time.”

When asked if she had to pick one card from inventory to put on her own front lawn right now, Marck added, “Hands down it would say ‘BE KIND’.”
