DOVER, NJ- The New Jersey Department of Transportation has announced that two railroad crossing rehabilitation projects, which will require road closures and detours, are expected to start within the next two weeks in Dover. The projects will be done simultaneously, and both projects are expected to be completed within about a week.

Work had been scheduled to start on Monday, March 20, but has been postponed due to the recent winter storm. It is likely to start next Monday, March 27.

The work is being done by contractor Tracks Unlimited of Mountainside at crossings on Lower Richboynton Road and on North Salem Street. A separate upgrade project will be done by Morris County on the Sammis Avenue crossing, once the initial two crossings are improved. The rail line is used by the Morristown & Erie Railway.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Dover, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJ DOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

LOWER RICHBOYNTON ROAD:
Work will start at 7 a.m.  on weekdays. Two-way traffic on Richboynton Road is scheduled to be closed at the railroad crossing near Route 15 /West Clinton Street and Number 100 Lower Richboynton Road. The following detour will be in place:

Lower Richboynton Road Detour:

  • Vehicles will be directed to use Route 15/West Clinton Street and upper Richboynton Road located north of construction in the vicinity of Bowlby Street

NORTH SALEM STREET:
Work will start at 7 a.m. on weekdays. Two-way traffic on North Salem Street is scheduled to be closed between Richards Avenue and East Blackwell Street, before the railroad grade crossing. The following detours will be in place:

North Salem Street east detour:

  • Vehicles traveling east on North Salem Street will be directed to use Rutan Drive between Richards Avenue and East Blackwell Street

North Salem Street west detour:

  • Vehicles traveling west on North Salem Street will be directed to use Mercer Street between Richards Avenue and East Blackwell Street

Traffic detours will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roads will be reopened accordingly.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.orgfor real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
