As we enter the month of October, we notice the cooler temperatures and the foliage that beautifies our landscape.  With the change in seasons, we are reminded that the weather can be rather unpredictable.  Anyone who has lived in Randolph or the surrounding area during the past decade will recall the back to back October ice and snow storms of 2011, the havoc wreaked on our trees, the road closures, and the resulting power outages experienced by so many.  Although devastating at the time, they were just a foreshadowing of the larger natural disaster we faced a year later in the form of Super storm Sandy.  It was this storm that changed the way the township approaches emergency preparedness, specifically, how we communicate with residents during and after storm events.

Following the clean-up efforts after Hurricane Sandy, the Township Council and staff completed a full review and overhaul of our emergency communication plan. The plan changes included the initiation of several new communication tools for residents to access information during and after storm events.  These communication tools continue today to be the cornerstone of the township’s emergency communication plan and residents are encouraged to connect with these services to be better informed in future emergencies.  The following is a summary of the opt-in services offered by Randolph Township and Morris County:

 

Randolph Township services:

  • Township Websitewww.randolphnj.org  Includes news items as well as alerts, when necessary.
  • Swift911 – This system is vital for emergency communications.  To register, visit the township website homepage and click the icon on the right side. You will be prompted to add your contact information.  You can identify how you wish to receive notifications by adding your telephone numbers for calls and/or text messages, and your email address.  Currently, only one-third of township residents have registered.
  • Facebook – follow us, or like us, Township of Randolph, to see posts on events as well as emergency information.
  • Twitter – Follow us, @RandolphTwpNJ, to see tweets on events and emergency information.

Residents who do not own a computer or a cell phone are encouraged to establish a contact connected with township communication media. 

 

Morris County services:

  • Smart911 – Allows residents to create a Safety Profile at www.smart911.com for their household that includes vital information you want 9-1-1 call takers and first responders to have before they arrive in the event of an emergency.  Add as much or as little information as you want to your profile; key information about people in your household, medical information, a difficult location to find, pets, etc.  All 9-1-1 calls are routed through the Morris County Communication Center, not our local Randolph Police Department.
  • AlertMorris – allows residents to receive emergency alerts by whatever method of communication they prefer – email, text, phone, or social media.

For those residents with trick or treaters, please take advantage of the fun and safe annual Trunk or Treat event to be held Saturday, October 26 at Brundage Park.  This event, which evolved as a result of the above-mentioned storms, is sponsored by the Randolph Township Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community services and the Mt. Freedom Fire Department.  Children walk from car trunk to car trunk to get their treats.  There will be hayrides, hot chocolate, and an outdoor movie in addition to lots of candy!  Special prizes will be awarded to the best decorated trunks or storage areas.  Admission is $15/car, payable at the event, but you must pre-register through the Department’s online registration site.  The 180 spots will be secured on a first come, first served basis.  For questions call 973-989-7081.
