MORRISTOWN, NJ- Every September, thousands of cyclists from all over the country flock to Morristown for the annual Gran Fondo NJ. With a mission of “giving back to our community”, Gran Fondo NJ has continually raised funds for charitable organizations in the area, and Homeless Solutions, Inc. is honored to once again be a beneficiary. On Sunday, September 9th, over 65 riders joined our “Riding for Homes” team and despite the rain took to the streets to help us build a better tomorrow.

There are five different route options, giving riders of all experience levels the chance to enjoy some of New Jersey’s most scenic places. The 18, 42, 62, 75, or 107 mile routes provide an opportunity for our riders to do something they enjoy while fundraising for a cause they truly believe in.

With an ambitious goal to raise $70,000, and a day filled with cold temperatures, rain, and wind, our riders had a tough road ahead. The funds will be used towards our newest housing project on Martin Luther King Avenue in Morristown. The eight unit property is our first to offer a four-bedroom apartment, allowing us the ability to accommodate larger families – a need in our community.

There is an overwhelming need for affordable housing in Morris County. For the last 14 years, we have built and rehabbed 66 affordable housing units all over the county. They have become homes to people you see every day. People who work in our community and make our community work – pouring our double lattes, ringing up groceries at our supermarkets, teaching children at our childcare centers.

Over the past 35 years, HSI has been helping the homeless and working poor in Morris County. We are unique in what we do, and our philosophy of “A Hand Up, Not a Handout” perfectly describes that. CEO Dan McGuire explains, “It’s not just about housing the homeless. The goal is to provide people with the tools they need to rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient. We are working to break the cycle of homelessness.”

When asked what motivates him to continue to be such a strong advocate and fundraiser for the HSI team year after year, seven-time Gran Fondo rider and Team Captain Steve Trozinski stated, “Combining a great cycling event with a great cause makes it easy for me to raise money for something I am passionate about. When people understand the impact we are trying to have on the community, they are always very supportive.”

It’s not too late to support the team. https://www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/riding-for-homes-2018

About Gran Fondo
Gran Fondo means "big ride" or "big endurance" in Italian. Taking place annually in September, Gran Fondo NJ starts and ends in Morristown, New Jersey. The event is just like the Gran Fondo rides of Europe, but with unique and scenic roads and great local specialty foods, and it brings the excitement of a mass-participation ride to all levels of cyclists.  There is also an optional fundraising component to the event – it has been used by riders supporting local and national charities and has generated over $1,000,000 in donations since its inception.
