RANDOLPH, NJ- Candidate interviews for the current vacancy on the Board of Education were scheduled to be held January 21st during the regular business session. Due to an unforeseen emergency, one of the candidates was not able to participate and as a result, the Board of Education decided to reschedule candidate interviews to allow all three candidates the opportunity to be considered for the position.
Although the Board of Education knew this decision would exceed the 65-day limit to fill the open vacancy, the district was optimistic after speaking with counsel that an extension could be granted. Administration immediately informed the County Superintendent’s office with the intentions of requesting and receiving that extension.
Ms. Jennifer Fano received correspondence and spoke with County Superintendent Dr. Angelica Allen-McMillan this morning (Tuesday, 1/28/2020). Dr. Allen-McMillan advised that since the process to interview and appoint a new board member exceeds the 65-day period stated in statute, the County Superintendent must personally conduct interviews of each candidate.
Dr. Allen-McMillan will follow a specific process in collaboration with the district. Business Administrator Gerald Eckert has sent each candidate’s resume and cover letter, as well as the petition that was sent to the Board to Dr. Allen-McMillan. She will interview all three candidates asking the same questions of each during their individual interviews. She hopes to schedule these interviews as soon as possible with some interviews possibly being held this week. Upon review of each candidate’s qualifications, Dr. Allen-McMillan will select the individual she feels is most appropriate to serve.
Once this decision has been reached, she will notify the Board of Education with the successful candidate who will fill the vacancy. She is optimistic about this process noting that she been successful in her past experience filling Board of Education vacancies in other districts.
