RANDOLPH, NJ- Randolph High School senior Alex Zager successfully auditioned for the 2019-2020 North Jersey Area Band competing against student musicians from almost 40 other schools in the northern part of New Jersey. He was selected and honored for his exceptional performance on the baritone saxophone. He is one of 9 wind and symphonic band selections from Randolph who will be featured individually over the next few weeks.
Alex started playing the alto saxophone in the 6th grade before switching to the baritone saxophone. When asked what the difference is between the two: "The alto saxophone is a lot smaller and it has a higher pitch. The baritone saxophone is bigger and has a lower pitch."
He developed an interest in the saxophone at a young age and was interested in playing the instrument when he was at Shongum Elementary. "I remember liking the saxophone over many other instruments and I always wanted to play it. I kept bugging my parents to let me play it , and they finally let me. I was excited to be in the band!"
In addition to band, Alex has been involved in other activities at Randolph High School. He is a member of the men's golf team, and he played for the men's ice hockey team. When he graduates this spring, Alex would like to attend veterinary school.
Alex is grateful for the opportunities he has had at Randolph. "There's a lot to do here and there are many different things that you can try, especially with the band program. There's multiple bands you can play with and there's always something to do at the school. It makes school that much more fun."
