RANDOLPH, NJ—On Dec. 19, the Randolph High School Boys Indoor Track and Field Team began their 2019-2020 season at the DeShriver Invite at Drew University in Madison, NJ. The Rams are looking to continue their success from last season, coming into this winter as defending state sectional champs for the indoor season.
When asked about the team's goals coming into the season, distance coach Nick Albanito stated, “As always, to win the County Relay championship, but also to repeat as State Sectional Champions.”
The Rams are already off to a hot start after their first meet with Kevin Pereira running a time of 6.89 seconds in the 55-meter dash and placing fifth.
Pereira was certainly happy with his start to the season, “I feel great, better than last season. I beat my personal record and that felt great.”
His performance was followed up by Alex Hai who ran 4.57 in the 1600-meter run, and Frankie Zarro who ran 1:27.97 in the 600-meter dash.
Hai also expressed optimism about his start to the season and is eager for the opportunity to get better with each meet.
“Although my [personal record] is actually better than that, I am happy with the way I raced today because it is the first meet and there’s always room for improvement,” said Hai.
Along with the distance and sprint teams, the throwers and jumpers also put in a strong showing. Zane Aschenbrenner, senior, and Jacob Hitland, senior and defending county champion in High Jump, led the way. Aschenbrenner threw 41”9’ in the shotput, and Hitland jumped 6”2’ in the high jump respectively.
Senior Eric Byrne also placed second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 13 feet.
“[our goal] for the team is to just start to improve and to get better every day”, said Aschenbrenner, highlighting the team's excitement for the season and what they believe they can accomplish.
The Rams will compete three more times in 2019. They just participated in the Gardiner Holiday Relays on Saturday, Dec. 21, and will compete at the Passaelli Invite on Dec. 23, as well as the Racine Invite on Dec. 27, all at Drew University.
