RANDOLPH, NJ- the Randolph boys ice hockey team had hit a bit of a rut in the past week, turning in two ties in a row and seeming to lack the jump they had for most of the season.
But a rival game against Roxbury, along with the injection of a few new faces getting ice time were just what the Rams needed, as they stormed to a 7-2 victory at Mennen Arena on Wednesday Jan. 29.
The Rams controlled play for most of the first period, firing shot after shot on the Gaels net. Roxbury goalie Ryan Callahan played superb, facing 20 shots in the period and turning away all but one. With two minutes left in the period, JT Zangara scored from in front off a feed from Ben Yurchuk behind the net.
In the second period, Matt Rogers scored just two minutes in for a 2-0 Rams lead as the offensive zone pressure continued. Then with seven minutes left in the period, Zangara scored again on an almost identical play to his first goal, taking a perfect pass from Yurchuk behind the net again.
That goal opened the floodgates and was the first of what became a four-goal flurry in five minutes. Luke Spagnuolo, Zach Gallo, and Zangara scored in succession to blow the game open by the score of 6-0 Randolph.
Roxbury grabbed a power play goal from Nick Hefferle with nine minutes left to make it a 6-1 game. Zangara added his fourth goal of the game ( Off the fourth assist of the game from Yurchuk ) with just over five minutes left. Finally, for the Gaels, Kevin Keane netted the final score of the night to make the final score 7-2 Randolph.
