The Jaffe Briefing - December 8, 2021

TRENTON – Winter is coming. And that means a whole new round of debates about vaccinations for private businesses. The Asbury Park Press reports that Gov. Phil Murphy has a tough decision: Does he follow NYC and make vaccines mandatory for private companies or does he roll the dice with the emerging COVID variants? Of course, this mandate – like any other in New Jersey – would ...

The Jaffe Briefing - December 6, 2021

MONTCLAIR – As we are still trying to figure out if 2021 was “good” or “bad,” there’s at least one sector of New Jersey that has endless blessings to count. And that would be anyone who sold real estate this year. NJ.com reports that homes sold at more than 100% of asking price every month except February, when they sold at “just” 99.9% of asking ...

The Jaffe Briefing - December 3, 2021

TRENTON – Stunning that the news of the day at the Statehouse has nothing to do with the people’s business. Rather it’s about some headline-grabbing Republican lawmakers, who flagrantly ignored the Statehouse mandate to show a vaccination card or a negative test – following the deaths of nearly 28,500 New Jerseyans from this stubborn pandemic. These lawmakers ignored state ...

The Jaffe Briefing - December 2, 2021

TRENTON – The state Legislature is actually in session today, with plenty of lame-duck bills in the pile. But the news is not about what laws will be passed. Rather, it’s all about who will actually show up to vote. Republican lawmakers are suing over a mandate that anyone entering the Statehouse be vaccinated or tested. In the crosshairs is a group that no one knew ever existed ...

TOMS RIVER – In politics, is there really anything “permanent”? Of course not. But that has not stopped the township council from “permanently” banning recreational marijuana businesses. Some residents expressed disappointment with the so-called “permanent” ban, the Asbury Park Press reports, noting a 2020 referendum showed that 63.7% of township voters ...

With Reproductive Freedom in Danger, NJ Must Expand Protections and Accees

December 7, 2021

When Texas banned nearly all abortions, it showed us that what happens on the state level can reach far beyond state lines. Just as starkly, it has shown the grim reality that when reproductive freedom comes under threat, people of color and those on the economic margins will undeniably bear the brunt of the harms caused by abortion restrictions.

Following the Texas ban, people ...
