SAYREVILLE, NJ -- When walking into Cocina Borinqueña, a place that truly brings a taste of Puerto Rico to New Jersey, you’ll find that the most significant change over the past three months are the stacked-up chairs and the lack of salsa music that usually fills the eatery with joy.

What hasn’t changed, however, is Damaris Falto’s dedication to her restaurant and customers.

When Damaris opened in March 2019, she never dreamed that her days would soon be filled with an abundance of takeout orders and her three children’s schoolwork.

But she still comes to work six days a week with a smile on her face. Monday has always been her day off, from the restaurant, that is.

Cocina Borinqueña, located at 3292 Washington Road, offers home cooked favorites from empanadas to alcapurrias, a delicious fritter made of meat or plantains, to the classic rice and beans with chicken.

These recipes have been passed down from generation to generation, making Cocina Borinqueña the perfect spot for some comfort food with a Puerto Rican flair. Not to mention that the $5.99 lunch special - available Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. - will keep you feeling full way past dinner.

Catering is also available for all of your socially distant gatherings.

One of Damaris’s favorite aspects of being a restaurant owner in Sayreville, and a proud resident for the past 15 years, is connecting with the friends and neighbors who stop in often – like the always-hungry crowd at Riverton.

“One of the biggest compliments I receive is when someone says my food tastes like their grandmother’s cooking,” she added. “That’s what Cocina Borinqueña is all about.”

Damaris is pleased to have seen many so new customers over the past few months. One day, she even greeted Sayreville Mayor Vicky Kilpatrick, who was laser focused on buying empanadas for her family for dinner.

Damaris says she is always looking to introduce more people to the delicious flavors of Puerto Rico and her family’s treasured recipes. So, stop in, say hi and try everything on the menu. It’s all fresh, handmade and waiting for you.
