To own and run a successful restaurant for this long is extraordinary. 

Half of all restaurants go out of business by their third year.  When I asked Danny what drove him and the secret to his success he put it very simply: “Desperation, love of food, love of the business and love of people.”

We talked about his health and he related that he was, “Treated for cancer in 2004, had three heart treatments, an Achilles tendon repair, 2 shoulder surgeries, had a hip replaced and is having a knee replaced in the near future.”

Talk about the Bionic Man!

Danny said that the best part of the business was “Being the boss and working for myself.  I love my customers and the people I work with.”

He got a little philosophical saying that, “At 75 I wish I was 45.  I feel good.  As long as you maintain your health and don’t put off any health issues you’ll be OK. Preventative maintenance very important.” 

Asked if he ever thought of slowing down Danny said, “To retire is to die and I’m not retiring.”

Excellent philosophy.

He told a story of Mike, the Italian maintenance man for The Galleria, and asked, “How’s he doing?” Mike replied: “It’s always better to wake up, then look up, at the broccoli rabe!”
