• We have gone fine free! The Red Bank Public Library suspended late fines at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we have decided to make that suspension permanent. You can read our full reasoning for doing so here, but the short of it is this:
    • Getting rid of late fines means many people will be more likely to use the library, and we want everyone who can use the library to be able to. Also, it will make visiting us more pleasant if you don't have to pay a late fine!
    • Late fines just aren't effective. We've been fine free in our Children's Room since June 2018, and we've found that our return rates are actually higher without them.
    • We are still charging fees for lost or damaged materials, and other libraries in our system may still charge fines -- it's up to the individual library.
    • Late fines make up a negligible percentage of our overall budget. We believe the benefit of this policy outweighs the very small cost.
