We asked a few questions of David to learn about his business.

TAP:  How and why did you become interested in art?

I am an artist and have been around art my whole life.  I previously owned and operated a leading international fine art Atelier print shop (Chameleon Editions) for 15 years.  I had the great pleasure of creating hand pulled serigraphs for leading international artists.

I am a hands-on owner and take great pride in the fact I have a life time of experience and great love of art.  I have done everything in the business from creating art, fine art printing, publishing art and selling it wholesale to galleries. And now I own a beautiful retail art gallery!

TAP: What makes a great artist and what criteria do you use when selecting art pieces for your gallery?

Our mission is to show many styles from traditional fine art to abstract and nonobjective art.  Our goal is to be eclectic and display many types of paintings sculpture, and glass pieces.  There is a number of art and artists to choose from, but I feel my experience and knowledge has guided me in picking wonderful art to display.

TAP:  Where do find your art pieces?

Through my many years in the fine art print business I have an extensive network and follow art trends and artists.  I am very selective in what art I choose for the gallery.  I show art from around the world as well as a local artists

I hear consistently from clients that no matter what type of art you like, you will find something that speaks to you at Beacon Fine Arts Gallery.

TAP:  Tell us about Sharon Hathaway, who assists clients in selecting art for their collections and the frames that complement, preserve, and enhance their artwork.  Tell us what that entails.

We have a full service in-house archival and creative frame shop.  Sharon is not only one of my most popular local artists but an amazing framer.  We carry an extensive selection of frames; from gilded to Peruvian leather to more traditional and affordable frames from leading companies.

There is not right or wrong way to frame something.  You can put five different frames on a work of art and they can all be beautiful.  We help the client pick out the mat, glass and frame that best works with their taste and décor.

TAP:  You offer prints that are serigraphs and giclees placed on high quality paper or canvas.  Tell us about these types pieces.

We carry signed giclee’s from artists that we currently show and original paintings in the gallery, and also have an extensive rare collection of hand pulled serigraphs.  My gallery is primarily an “originals” gallery, but we do offer the more affordable option of giclees and hand pulled serigraphs.

TAP:  What questions do you ask new clients who are interested in starting a collection?

We try to educate potential collectors about the art and the artist themselves.  We often say there is no right or wrong art, but it’s what they like that matters the most.

Not only do we show a wide-ranging collection of art, but the price point varies from just a few hundred dollars to over twenty thousand dollars.

Some artists are very collectable for investment but I tell my clients they should buy an art piece because they love it.  And, if the art increases in value in the future it’s found money.

We take great pride in working with our clients in a relax atmosphere, there’s no pressure and no question is ever too foolish.

We also offer to bring their selected art piece(s) to their homes to see what might work or not.

TAP:  What’s the best part of the business?

I would have to say finding the right painting, sculpture and even framing for a client probably is the best part of business.

I really enjoy having exhibitions and our next one is for a great California artist Goli Mahallati on November 9th and 10th where we will be offering wine and hors d’ouvres.  Click HERE for the announcement.

The shows are always exciting as our clients get to personally meet the artists.  To see the great satisfaction on both of their faces is the best!

TAP:  The most challenging?

I would have to say it’s keeping the art fresh and new in the gallery.  I am always trying to get new work in here, being very selective in what I pick from each artist.

I try to obtain what I think is their best work from what they currently have produced.
