RED BANK, NJ – Dr. Kristen Martello was appointed as the new Head of School at the Red Bank Charter School which was announced by Board of Trustees President Eric Wagner on June 3rd. Dr. Martello’s appointment is effective July 1st.
Martello replaces Meredith Pennotti, who led the school for nineteen years announced her retirement earlier this year. Pennotti joined the school a little more than a year after it was founded in 1997 as one of the first charter schools to open in New Jersey.
“We are thrilled to have Kristen as our next Head of School,” said Board of Trustees President Eric Wagner. “She fully understands and embraces our philosophy of educating the whole child through rigorous academics combined with unique instructional programming, character education and service learning.”
Thirteen committee members, led by the Personnel Committee of the Board of Trustees, reviewed applications and interviewed candidates. Members of the greater Red Bank community and the New Jersey Charter Schools Association also provided input.
“We conducted a comprehensive search and received applications from many well-qualified candidates,” Wagner said. “All the candidates were impressive, but Kristen’s experience, administrative skill set and passion for education set her apart from the others.”
An experienced educator and administrator, Martello graduated from Pennsylvania State University and began her career as a health and physical education teacher in 1998 at the Sussex County Charter School for Technology in Sussex, N.J. Dr. Martello earned a master’s degree in 2005 in Educational Leadership from Jersey City State University while teaching full time at Hopatcong High School in Hopatcong, NJ.
Dr. Martello moved to southern New Jersey in 2005. After a brief sabbatical to start her family, Martello continued her teaching career in the Gibbsboro School District and was appointed principal in the district after just one year. In 2010, she was named assistant superintendent in neighboring Berlin Borough School District, where she was later appointed superintendent. During that period, she earned her doctorate in education from Walden University.
“I am honored to be selected as the next Head of School at RBCS,” Dr. Martello said. “I could feel the sense of community and pride the very first time I visited. I look forward to getting to know and working with the entire community to continue the tradition of excellence that has been firmly established.”
“Kristen’s fundamental beliefs about the role a school plays in both the intellectual and social- emotional development of the child are directly aligned with the core beliefs that we have adhered to for two decades,” Pennotti said. “She is well suited to serve as the Vision Keeper who will lead Red Bank Charter School as it transitions to its next, exciting chapter.”
