Top 10 ways to Lower Your College Costs:

  • Develop a list of schools where your child is in the top 20% incoming accepted applicants.   Merit money can be very significant – and they are free dollars!
  • Discuss with your student what the budget is for school – and what their specific share of the expense is.  Their skin in the game and their understanding of what that will mean is very important
  • Have a comprehensive plan of attack that takes into account a deep dive on the financial aid process for all schools being considered- and understand fully how to exploit the aid process to your favor
  • Look at your assets that you are going to be deploying for college – and ensure that they are not working against you from a financial aid standpoint
  • Understand fully what constitutes your family’s expected contribution number – i.e., your family’s “deductible” for any particular college – and see if there are strategies to lower it.
  • Often times, there are ways to accomplish that
  • Review all financial aid data at all schools being considered – and start mapping likely out of pocket costs for each
  • Work study should be considered.  Jobs are generally very easy and, often, the student can be doing their homework while “working”
  • Community college is a great option for the first 2 years.   For 10 cents on the dollar, your student gets most of the basic requirements out of the way
  • Do your homework on the loan programs out there.  There are many lenders and structures – What loan fits the best for your family?
  • Don’t shop on emotion.   Shop for colleges having a budget and strategy in mind ahead of time before getting your student too emotionally tied to a school
