RED BANK, NJ: Tony Okupski, Commodore of the newly formed Navesink Vintage Race Boat Committee (NVRBC), discussed the preliminary plans and requirements with the Special Events Committee to have a regatta on June 5th through the 7th.

The NVRBC, a nonprofit staffed by dedicated volunteers, is working with the borough and numerous agencies to ensure that all necessary permits and regulations are met.

It’s a huge job.

Thomas Walsh, Red Bank Fire Marshall and other committee members worked with Okupski discussing the myriad of rules and protocols, including the layout of Marine Park, food vendors, U.S. Coast Guard and all emergency personnel that will be involved.

“Our knowledgeable committee members who are all volunteers, are dedicated to bringing back the Red Bank Regatta on the beautiful Navesink River.  This is an American Power Boat Association sanctioned event.  Friday will be the driver’s arrivals, setting up the pits and a reunion for them and their participants.  Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00am until 3:00pm, will be the run times for participating boats in this exhibition,” said Okupski.

This event will increase the national recognition of Red Bank.

Racing on the Navesink began back in 1927 with the town given the name, "River Sports Center of the East" when an estimated crowd of 15,000 watched a race from New York’s Battery to Red Bank the following year.

The local business owners are already excited and willing to support the event.

Okupski commented that, “We have been contacted by a majority of the Red Bank merchants and restaurants to present some static boat displays and they are excited to bring back this historical event.”
