RIDGEWOOD, NJ - After recent reports of “minor confrontations and vandalism,” Ridgewood Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas A. Gorman announced in a letter to the community that all district property will be closed on Fridays and Saturdays from 6 pm until 7:30 am May 7 through June 26.

Gorman said that teenagers from many surrounding towns have been gathering on Ridgewood Public Schools’ property. Further details from local law enforcement indicate a group of teenagers were at the High School this Saturday when officers from nine agencies responded to disperse the crowd. In a prior weekend, a fight broke out between two teenagers that required law enforcement attention as well.

The Superintendent said that a security company has been hired to patrol school grounds on Friday and Saturday evenings and will notify Ridgewood Police Department “should there be large gatherings of people.”

Gorman said: “We believe these measures will help control the situation. We will be closely monitoring the issue with the police and will make adjustments to the plan as necessary. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.”

The Board of Education meets this Monday, where it is expected that the recent vandalism and decision to close the premises on weekends will be discussed.
